How to Apply FOR A MEDICAL STUDENT ROTATION

UPDATED 03/16/24:

Thank you for your interest in the Emergency Medicine Clerkship at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia/ Prisma Health Richland. The USC School of Medicine Columbia and Prisma Health Richland will accept applications for visiting students, and at this time, there are no restrictions for away student rotations with our program and we encourage students to follow advice of their institutions regarding applying for away rotations.

The updated catalog of rotations is currently available for viewing in VSLO/VSAS as of March 8, 2024. Applications will be accepted and reviewed beginning April 1, 2024. We will process applications and make offers on a rolling basis throughout April and early May.

We will provide students with an EM program SLOE in time for inclusion in their ERAS application.

Offers will be made and must be accepted via VSLO/VSAS. We can only accept applications from students via VSLO/VSAS and cannot accept or consider students outside of the VSLO process. 

Rotation Dates for 2024-2025 Academic Year:

Block 1: July 8- August 2, 2024

Block 2: August 5- August 30, 2024

Block 3: September 2- September 27, 2024

Block 4: September 30- October 25, 2024

Block 5: October 28- November 22, 2024

*Wilderness Medicine will only be offered during Sept 23-Oct 18, 2024-  other rotation dates are not available and will not be accepted. 

Students interested in the Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Emergency Ultrasound, Wilderness Medicine, and Simulation Medicine rotations may apply with our emergency department by using the VSLO/ Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).  The host institution is the University of South Carolina School of Medicine- Columbia. You may also directly contact our Program Administrator, Sherry Allen, by e-mail at sherry.allen@prismahealth.org or call her at 803-434-3790 for assistance.

We require the following information to be submitted via VSLO/VSAS to consider your application for a rotation in our department:

  • Current transcript from your medical school
  • Copy of your USMLE and/or COMLEX transcripts
  • Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Immunization records demonstrating all institutionally required vaccinations, including COVID-19

Applications for other rotations are reviewed separately as rotations in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EM Clinical Ultrasound, and Simulation Medicine are offered year round based on availability. The Wilderness Medicine rotation is offered only from 9/23-10/18, 2024, with applications generally due at least 30-days prior to the start date of the rotation.
