General Information

The emergency medicine residency program of Palmetto Health has a long and noteworthy history. With its inception in 1974, it was one of only a dozen programs nationally that viewed emergency medicine as a bona fide specialty. Fully accredited and continuously evolving, the program continues to be a leader in the post-graduate training of emergency physicians.

The educational resources of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and the clinical services of Palmetto Health Richland — the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the 16-county Midlands region — provide the ideal setting for the training of future emergency medicine specialists. Palmetto Health Richland’s Emergency Department has experienced a steadily increasing annual patient census, with more than 73,000 patient visits per year.
