How to Apply FOR A MEDICAL STUDENT ROTATION

Students interested in the Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Emergency Ultrasound, Wilderness Medicine, and Simulation Medicine rotations may apply with our emergency department by using the VSLO/ Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).  The host institution is the University of South Carolina- Columbia Campus. You may also directly contact our residency coordinator, Sherry Allen, by e-mail at sherry.allen@prismahealth.org or call her at 803-434-3790 for assistance.

We require the following information to consider your application for a rotation in our department:

  • Current transcript from your medical school
  • Copy of your USMLE and/or COMLEX transcripts
  • Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • The dates you would like to rotate with our department

Once this information is provided, we will begin processing your application.

The USC-SOM Columbia generally opens VSAS for accepting applications in early March. Applications for the core EM rotation are reviewed and rotation spots are offered on a rolling basis during mid-March to mid-April. Applications will continue to be reviewed and spots offered based on availability throughout April and May. Please contact us if you have special concerns or considerations.

Applications for other rotations are reviewed separately as rotations in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EM Clinical Ultrasound, and Simulation Medicine are offered year round based on availability. The Wilderness Medicine rotation is offered only in the spring, with applications generally due at least 30-days prior to the start date of the rotation. Please contact our department with any questions.
